Why Foot Rests?
Foot rests are often over-looked aspects of good office ergonomics. But the fact is: Where the feet rest determines how the back and legs feel.
When the feet are not planted firmly on the ground or supported in some other way, a neutral body posture cannot be maintained. Circulation is often restricted in the legs. And leg extension can apply pressure to the lower back.
Foot rests help reduce the stress placed on the feet, legs, and spine by helping to keep the lower back in proper alignment. They also promote needed circulation in the legs, especially if they can oscillate to stretch the ankles and calves.
Foot rests are recommended in many situations. Some workers cant find a seat adjustment that creates a good position for their legs. Very often, people adjust their chairs for proper alignment with their desks, then find that their feet dangle! And many people simply prefer using foot rests, finding them the easiest solution.
Ideally, a foot rest should allow adjustment up to a 5" height, though a 2" 5" range will comfortably fit 95% of workers. Tilt angle up to 35º will also provide maximum comfort for most people. Foot rests that allow for gentle foot movement can stretch the ankles and calves to promote better circulation.
Wherever used, foot rests can increase personal comfort and productivity. When a person is sitting comfortably with the feet and back supported, its easier to work.
